A Search Console report showing search clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position for a selected view.

The Search results Performance report in Google Search Console shows clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position for the selected view. It helps investigate how a site appears in search and how people interact with those results.

Filters and grouping shape the question being answered. A report for one page, country or search type is different from a whole-property view. Average position summarizes the relevant topmost result across observations; it is not a promise that every searcher sees a particular page in the same numbered position.

Query rows have reporting limitations, and aggregations can behave differently from a simple sum of visible rows. A change in a site-wide average may also reflect a different mixture of queries rather than every page moving up or down. Inspect the relevant segments before choosing a response.

Takeaway: Use the report to form a focused diagnosis: which page, query group or audience changed? Keep clicks and visibility separate from downstream customer outcomes.

Example

A business gains impressions for a broader set of searches after adding a guide. Its overall average position may change even if its main service queries remain stable. Reviewing the guide and service pages separately provides a clearer picture than reacting only to the property-wide average.

What to check

Save the date range, search type and filters with exports or screenshots. Compare appropriate periods and check preliminary-data status when using recent results. Do not interpret a missing query row as proof that nobody searched that phrase.
