What could more organic traffic mean for your business? Use our SEO ROI calculator to estimate potential leads, sales and annual revenue from your own traffic, conversion rates and SEO budget. Compare lead generation and eCommerce scenarios, then adjust the numbers to see what changes the return.
How to use the SEO ROI calculator
- Choose your business model. Use Lead Gen if visitors become inquiries before becoming customers. Choose eCommerce for purchases made on your website.
- Enter your annual organic traffic. Use visits from organic search for a consistent 12-month period. If you only have a typical monthly figure, multiply it by 12 and account for seasonal differences.
- Add your conversion numbers. For lead generation, enter the percentage of visitors who become leads and the percentage of leads who become customers. For eCommerce, enter your purchase conversion rate and average order value.
- Set a growth scenario and annual SEO cost. Include the SEO work you are budgeting for, such as strategy, content, technical improvements and ongoing management. Change one assumption at a time to compare scenarios.
How is SEO ROI calculated?
This calculator compares the additional revenue in your growth scenario with your annual SEO investment:
Revenue-based SEO ROI = ((projected revenue − current revenue − annual SEO cost) ÷ annual SEO cost) × 100
For lead generation, revenue is estimated from organic visits × lead conversion rate × lead-to-customer close rate × average customer value. For eCommerce, it uses organic visits × purchase conversion rate × average order value.
The result measures revenue return, not net profit. Product costs, service delivery costs, refunds and other operating expenses are not deducted. To evaluate profitability, also consider the margin on the additional sales.
An SEO return-on-investment example
Consider a business with 6,000 annual organic visits, a 3% lead conversion rate, a 25% close rate and $1,500 in revenue per customer. Those inputs produce an estimated $67,500 in current annual revenue from organic search.
At 40% more traffic with the same conversion rates, the scenario produces 8,400 visits, 252 leads and $94,500 in revenue. That is $27,000 in additional revenue. After a $12,000 annual SEO investment, the calculator shows a 125% revenue-based return. These are editable example inputs, not SmallBizSEO package pricing or promised results.
Build a useful SEO budget scenario
Start with your own analytics and sales records wherever possible. Compare a cautious growth scenario with a stronger one, then test how changes in conversion rate, close rate and customer value affect the outcome. More traffic is only one part of the calculation: the quality of that traffic and your ability to convert it matter too.
The calculator applies your projected traffic level across a full year. It does not model month-by-month growth or predict how quickly rankings will improve. Use consistent annual revenue and cost periods. Lifetime customer value answers a different question from first-year revenue, so avoid mixing the two unintentionally.
SEO ROI calculator questions
Can this calculator predict my SEO results?
It models the inputs you choose. It does not forecast rankings, traffic growth or customer demand. Use it to compare scenarios, then measure actual organic traffic, qualified leads, sales and costs as your campaign progresses.
What is a good SEO ROI?
There is no single target that fits every business. Your margins, acquisition costs, customer retention and timing determine whether a return supports your goals. A positive revenue-based result alone does not establish a profit.
Why does zero traffic growth show −100% ROI?
With no modeled growth, the calculator attributes no additional revenue to the investment. If SEO cost is greater than zero, the revenue-based return is therefore −100%. When SEO cost is zero, ROI is undefined, so the calculator shows a dash.
Can I use this for a service business or an online store?
Yes. The Lead Gen tab includes a close rate for businesses that turn inquiries into customers. The eCommerce tab calculates purchases directly from traffic and purchase conversion rate.
