Website visits attributed to identifiable AI-service sources through available analytics information; not a complete measure of AI exposure or influence.

AI referral traffic describes visits attributed to identifiable AI services. It concerns people arriving on your website, not how often an answer mentioned or cited the business. A source can appear in many answers without receiving a corresponding number of visits, and analytics cannot automatically observe every interaction that happened before a visitor arrived.

The reporting label depends on the analytics system and its rules. Google Analytics now documents an AI Assistant default channel for certain sources and excludes Google AI Overviews and AI Mode from that channel. Do not assume every AI-related visit must appear under the generic Referral channel or that one channel captures all AI influence.

Attribution also depends on the information available when the visit is recorded. A report with no identifiable AI source is not proof that the visitor never used an AI service. Keep observed source data separate from broader claims about how a customer discovered the business, and interpret visits alongside the actual actions taken on the site.

Takeaway: Report identifiable AI-origin visits as measured traffic, not total AI exposure. State the analytics rules and distinguish visits from citations, mentions and business outcomes.

Example

A supplier observes sessions attributed to an AI service arriving at its installation guide. It checks whether those visitors continue to relevant product information or submit an inquiry. It does not count every session as a sale or assume that the guide’s citation frequency can be calculated from the traffic report alone.

What to check

Keep source, medium or channel definitions and date ranges with the report. Review classification changes before comparing periods, and verify that your measurement is working on the landing pages. Avoid mixing Google AI feature traffic with another platform’s channel without explaining the method.
