A reference to a brand or company in a digital publication or AI response, with or without an active hyperlink.
A brand mention names a company, product or service in a publication or AI response. It may include a link, but a link is not required. The surrounding context determines whether the reference is descriptive, positive, negative or simply part of an example.
Mentions should be checked for identity. Similar business names, abbreviations and product names can produce false matches. Confirm that the response refers to the intended organization before adding it to a visibility report. A matching word alone may be insufficient.
A mention is not necessarily a recommendation or a citation to the brand’s own website. An answer can discuss a company critically or quote a third-party source about it. Preserve those distinctions so that a larger mention count does not conceal inaccurate or unsuitable descriptions.
Takeaway: Review the context and correctness of references to your business. Count visibility separately from endorsement and customer response.
Example
An AI answer names a fictional booking provider while comparing reservation workflows, but says nothing about which provider to choose. That is a mention. A separate passage explicitly suggesting the provider for a stated use case would need a different classification.
What to check
Define acceptable name variants and how ambiguous matches are handled. Save the original response and its date, platform and prompt. When comparing periods, keep the sampled questions and counting rules consistent or disclose changes.
