Navigation using filters such as size, location, brand, or price. Filter combinations can generate many URLs.
Faceted navigation lets a visitor narrow a collection through attributes such as size, material, brand or availability. It is useful when a broad category contains many choices. Selecting several filters can create a different view of the same inventory, and the application may represent that combination in a URL.
The technical challenge is the number of combinations. A few useful filters can produce many addresses, including empty results, repeated views or combinations that have little value outside the current shopping session. Google’s crawling guidance warns that unrestricted facet URLs can consume substantial crawling resources and delay discovery of more useful URLs.
The solution is not automatically to remove filters or index every possible combination. Decide which views genuinely deserve stable search destinations and which exist mainly to help visitors refine a collection. Crawling restrictions, indexing directives and canonical signals perform different jobs; their interaction needs careful implementation rather than one blanket rule copied across the site.
Takeaway: Keep filters useful for customers while deliberately managing the URLs they produce. Separate worthwhile category destinations from endless combinations that add little independent value.
Example
A workwear retailer offers size, color, fabric and price filters. A stable category for waterproof work jackets may be useful on its own, while a temporary combination of an unusual size, one color and a narrow price range may produce no products. The team evaluates those views differently rather than treating every parameter combination as a new content page.
What to check
Inspect actual generated URLs, including reordered filters, empty selections and combinations with no results. Have a developer test the proposed crawl and indexing behavior before release. Preserve product discovery and customer navigation while reducing unnecessary URL expansion.
