An event designated as especially important to the business in GA4 (formerly known as a Conversion).
A key event in GA4 is a collected event designated as particularly important to the business. The event must first measure the intended action; marking it as key changes its reporting role, not the truth or accuracy of what the trigger records.
GA4 uses key-event terminology for these important actions. Google Ads conversions are related but distinct: a conversion can be created from an Analytics key event for advertising measurement and use. Keep those settings and labels separate instead of assuming every key event is automatically an advertising conversion.
Choose meaningful actions rather than marking every interaction. A telephone-link click may be worth tracking but is not proof of a completed call. Likewise, a form event should distinguish a successful submission from a button click or validation error.
Takeaway: Define important actions in business terms and verify their triggers. Avoid copying an arbitrary list of event names into every account regardless of the website’s actual workflow.
Example
A booking business marks a confirmed reservation event as key after testing that it fires only when a booking s\\\\\\ucceeds. It records calendar openings separately. Treating both actions as equivalent bookings would inflate the apparent result.
What to check
Document the event definition and counting settings. Test success, failure and duplicate paths after changes. Reconcile important actions with operational evidence where possible, and do not call every recorded key event a qualified customer or sale.
