Structured data describing an individual review or aggregate rating.

Review schema describes a review or a summary of ratings in structured data. An individual Review and an AggregateRating serve different purposes: one represents a particular review, while the other summarizes a collection. The content and values should match what the page actually presents.

Google’s review-snippet eligibility depends on the item type and its policies. Self-serving reviews of a LocalBusiness or Organization are not eligible when the reviewed entity controls the reviews about itself. Embedding a third-party review widget on the business’s own site does not remove that restriction.

This does not mean a business cannot display genuine testimonials for readers. It means displaying testimonials and qualifying for Google review stars are separate matters. Valid markup alone does not guarantee a rich result, and changing the entity type to evade the rule would misrepresent the content.

Takeaway: Check the reviewed item and applicable eligibility rules before implementing ratings markup. Never promise stars simply because a plugin can generate a rating object.

Example

A repair company displays customer testimonials on its own website. Those testimonials may help visitors understand experiences, but adding LocalBusiness rating markup does not make the company’s self-serving reviews eligible for Google review snippets. A third-party widget is not an automatic workaround.

What to check

Keep ratings, counts and review text accurate and visible where required. Assess policy eligibility separately from syntax validation. Do not copy unrelated review scores or relabel a business as a product just to pursue a different search appearance.
