A business’s estimated percentage share of total search visibility within a target market or set of tracked keywords.
Share of voice is a comparative share metric whose meaning depends on what is being counted. In SEO software it commonly describes a site’s estimated portion of visibility or search clicks within a defined tracked keyword set. Other contexts, including advertising and AI responses, can use different populations and formulas.
A percentage is only interpretable with a denominator. State which queries, locations, devices, competitors and reporting period are included, and identify the provider’s calculation. Changing the tracked set can change the share without a comparable change in the business’s underlying performance. A tool’s estimate is not the same as observed market revenue or a complete count of all searches.
Use the metric to compare like with like over time. A movement may help identify a topic group worth investigating, but the aggregate can hide gains in one area and losses in another. Segment the result where practical and check important queries or pages before deciding what action to take.
Takeaway: Report the exact definition and sample behind a share-of-voice figure. Treat it as contextual competitive evidence rather than a claim that the business owns that percentage of its entire market.
Example
In a hypothetical click-share model, a site is assigned 240 estimated clicks out of 1,200 estimated clicks across the tracked result set. Its share is 20%. That describes the stated model and sample, not 20% of all customers or sales in the industry.
What to check
Keep the denominator and query set consistent when comparing periods. If the denominator is zero, the percentage is undefined. Do not mix an AI mention share with a search click-share metric under one unlabeled trend.
